The majestic silhouette of huge cheese trees as a skyline: this is the first vision that one has of Bingerville when arriving from Abidjan. The city was a transitional capital until Abidjan became the final capital on August 30, 1899. The time it took for the city to be equipped with the necessary infrastructure for a lasting settlement. The second queen of Côte d'Ivoire was thus destined to remain only a vassal, a small ephemeral administrative center that would bow out in 1934. From then on, it will only be an ordinary urban center and will become after the independence a chief town of sub-prefecture. A city escaped from the noise and fury of Abidjan. It is limited to the north by the lagoon, Abobo and Anyama; to the south by the Ebrié lagoon; to the west by Grand-Bassam and to the east by Cocody. Before bearing the name of the first governor of the colony, Louis-Gustave Binger, Alhobé (named after a river revered by the ancestors), was a small village of Ebrié fishermen. Because of its proximity to Abidjan (18 km) and its easy access by highway, Bingerville became the main dormitory town of the economic capital The citytoday. Bingerville is experiencing a real estate boom thanks to its proximity to Cocody (an upscale neighborhood), its preserved green environment, its affordable prices and the project of a 2x2 lane road announced in 2020 that will connect Bingerville to Grand-Bassam via the village of Eloka (bridge planned). From now on, the city is fully integrated into Abidjan. It is still home to a multitude of traditional maquis along the lagoon in a preserved environment. On weekends, a crowd of visitors like to enjoy a feast with their feet in the water in a peaceful village setting, a stone's throw from the bustling megalopolis. The garden of the Governor's Palace, planted in 1904, has lost its beauty. Some even deplore that it has become "the temple of natural relief". However, the walks there are still very gentle, in the wild tangle of paper trees, mimosa, baobabs and cheese trees, and there are still some 228 plant species, of which 57 are local and 171 others come from all continents
