Tangkahan, nestled at the gateway to Gunung Leuser National Park, 5 hours from Medan (departures from Pinang Baris terminal), is often referred to as Sumatra's "undiscovered treasure". This village is renowned for its majestic elephants, offering the chance to ride these gentle giants and set off on a jungle trek, usually lasting three hours. Note that the elephants are washed daily at 9am and 4pm. Remember, you're in the jungle, so most of the time there will be no hot water or air-conditioned rooms in the accommodations. The elephant site is a 20-minute walk from the visitor center. It is possible to make a four-day trek to Bukit Lawang (or simply go there by ojek, with a 2h30 drive).
