The further east you go in Java, the stronger the Javanese traditions and culture become, with typical elements such as wayangs, kingdoms and sultanates persisting to this day. Around 30 km south of Jember, the seaside resorts of Watu Ulo offer grey sandy beaches with imposing waves, less suitable for swimming. However, the blond sandy beach of Papuma, accessible from Watu Ulo, offers a more pleasant setting, ideal for running. Regular buses from the Jember bus terminal provide easy access to Watu Ulo, followed by a trip by ojek or bemo to Papuma.
