Located in the extreme southwest of Java, Ujung Kulon National Park covers an area of around 750 km². It includes the mainland of Java, as well as the islands of Panaitan, Peucang and Handeuleum. The island of Peucang, located to the north of the park's mainland, offers simple bungalows and a restaurant. It's a perfect place to observe local wildlife, including deer, monkeys and monitor lizards. Nearby, about 10 minutes by boat, is Cidaon, a site where you can see free-roaming bantengs and Java peacocks. One of the highlights of a visit to the park is a canoe trip from Handeuleum Island, navigating the Cigenter River.Established in 1921 by the Dutch authorities, Ujung Kulon was originally intended to protect various species, including the Javan rhinoceros. Today, it is recognized as a World Heritage Site. Remarkably equipped with observation towers and refuges, the reserve, managed by the Forestry Department, is home to crocodiles, buffalo, wild pigs, deer, hornbills, macaques, sea lions, squirrels and panthers. As for the rhinos, there are now almost sixty of them.
