Seenu, also called Addu City, is located just below the equator, it is the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, but also one of the smallest. It extends, a little bit of heart, over 18 km east and 15 km from north to south. There are 5 inhabited islands in 23, including Hulhumeedhoo in the north, or Hithadhoo in the west. Most of them are connected by a 18 km cement road, built by the English when the Royal Air Force occupied Gan, which is obviously the longest land segment of the country. Gan Island is home to the airport and some textile industries. Hithadhoo, the largest island in the archipelago, is also the largest city in the Maldives after Malé, with more than 12 000 inhabitants. Maradhoo and Feydhoo, inhabited islands, are covered with coquitos, and their coasts are home to many small fishing harbours and traditional shipyards. Hulhumeedhoo is essentially a town dormitory, inhabitants working all in industries and Aéroport airport. The story of the atoll is quite unique. During the Second World War, it became a point of collapse for British troops in the Indian Ocean. A base of the RAF was built in Gan and occupied 1 200 Maldivian. At the end of the war, Gan was developed in a modern base with the most sophisticated equipment, capable of hosting RAF aircraft under the best conditions. The English left in 1976. A stay on Gan offers the possibility, unique in Maldives, to visit the surrounding islands at any time of day and night, and thus to appreciate the authentic way of life Maldivian. Gan Airport became the second international airport in the Maldives.Since the creation of tourism in the Maldives, the population of Addu has been working most in the tourism industry. The addu atoll has a very rich and varied marine life. The location is famous for whale watching and whale sharks. The coconut, which is the national tree of the Maldives, grows almost anywhere on these southern islands. There are also small lakes, wetter lands and swampy fields.Unlike other atolls in the Maldives, the Addu atoll has a natural anchorage in its basin and as the atoll is landlocked by large islands, the result is a natural port that is very calm and safe at any time for the ships and is not affected by seasonal variations. Finally, Addu Atoll is the only region in the Maldives that has not been affected by the phenomenon of coral bleaching in 1998. The islands are protected against storms and high waves of the Indian Ocean through coral barriers. This atoll really has a separate identity, and gives a sense of end to the world.
