Located 35 km south of Canberra, this national park includes the territory's highest point, Mount Bimberri (1,912 m), and in fact occupies 46% of the territory (106,095 hectares). It borders Mount Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales. The park's name is that given to the mountains by the Aborigines (it can simply be translated as Snowy Mountains). The site is a treasure trove, with human remains dating back over 21,000 years and at least 390 Aboriginal sites, including the Yankee Hat Rock Art Site with its rock paintings dating back over 800 years. Wildlife is abundant.
