In the hills near Tregaron stands the site of an ancient 12th-century Cistercian abbey. Founded in 1164, the abbey was not only a center of agricultural and farming activity, but also an important political center. It is said to have taken ninety years to build. The ruins are now visible thanks to excavations carried out in the 19th century. The remains of this enormous construction have retained the spirit of the period, with authentic painted ceramic tiles on the floor. There are three trails to explore around the abbey, details of which are available from the visitor center.
