Route 60 leads around the Dyrafjörður fjord before arriving at Þingeyri, a village of about 300 inhabitants, situated in a wilderness setting. Þingeyri was one of the first settlements in the western fjords before it became a whaling centre for many European fishermen.Leaving Þingeyri, the unpaved road 60 passes through the Hrafnseyrarheiði mountains, which offer many hiking opportunities. Above Haukadalur, the "Falcon Valley", rises Mount Kaldbakur (998 m), the highest point of the northwestern peninsula. The climb is not very difficult, but the weather is unpredictable.
