At first glance, it's hard to convince yourself to plan a stopover in Semey as part of your discovery of Kazakhstan. Behind the innocuous Kazakh name of the town, renamed after independence, lies the Semipalatinsk of sadder memory, famous for its disgraced Russian exiles and, more recently, for having been the center of Soviet nuclear testing: almost 500 A and H bombs were tested in the "Semipalatinsk polygon" between 1949 and 1989. However, if you can convince yourself that the tests took place 150 km from the city, Semey turns out to be one of the most pleasant city stops in the country.
