Located less than an hour west of Stockholm, Mariefred is a charming town with a rich history. Founded in the 11th century, it reached its apogee in the 14th century with the construction of the Gripsholm fortress on the shores of Lake Mälaren. Although little remains of this period, there are signs that the citadel was donated to the nearby Carthusian monastery. The town's name, "Marie-fred", derives from this religious congregation, Pacis Mariae. The town offers a multitude of year-round activities, from Gripsholm Castle, to boats and steam trains, to the charming town center.
