The visit of this hamlet of 310 inhabitants and its small museum (on the main street) is quickly done. Collingwood can be a pleasant stopover. In the 1850's, when gold deposits attracted gold miners in large numbers, the former Gibbstown served as a port. At that time, it was suggested that this prosperous village should become the capital of the country. The yellow metal attracted 2,500 pioneers and within a year the town had 4,000 residents. But the depletion of the veins was fatal to the village, and if it remains today, it is because it is on the road to Farewell Spit and the Heaphy Track, which attract tourists.
