This medium-sized city of 74,000 inhabitants has long suffered from a bad reputation, mainly because of its industrial past, which is obvious to visitors as soon as they leave the city center. However, it would be wrong to stop at this prejudice, because Sweden's 16th largest city has an amazing cultural concentration for its size. A pioneer city in the textile industry, its population grew from 3,000 in 1860 to more than 15,000 in 1900, with an ever-increasing workforce coming to work in the factories. The city still bears the legacy of this thriving industry, with one of Sweden's most renowned schools of fashion and textile design (Textilhögskolan) and a textile museum (Textilmuseet) that is a must for anyone interested in the field. Known as the "City of Sculpture", it is also one of the cities in Sweden with the highest concentration of urban art, so that a walk through the center of the city reveals works by internationally renowned artists. This open-air collection is managed by the Borås Art Museum, which also has a collection of over 5,000 works on view in the museum. Photography and pop art enthusiasts should not miss the Abecita Museum, a permanent and temporary exhibition space that spans three floors and almost 2.5 km2! You can see works by photographers from all over the world alongside works by pop-art legends such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Simply remarkable for a city of this size! The city center is small but charming, especially around the city park (Stadsparken). The latter, in addition to being well laid out, invites you to take a walk on the bridges and pontoons built along the Viskan river, which winds through the city. Don't miss a visit to Stora Torget to admire the old town hall.
