Churu, before independence, was the second most important city in the kingdom of the Maharaja of Bikaner. Founded in 1563, the city is located in the extreme northeast of Shekhawati, where temperatures are highest in summer and winters are harshest. In the 18th century, the city was an important crossroads for caravanners and merchants, and its fort was built at that time. But its influence declined over time in favor of cities closer to the Jaipur region. During the British Empire, the Maharaja of Bikaner encouraged the merchants to return to Churu. It was during this period that the most beautiful haveli, the Surana or the Surajmal Banthia, and the most important temples, the Ganga, the Shantinath, were built.
