Churu before independence was the second most important city in the kingdom of the Maharaja of Bikaner. Founded in 1563, the town is located at the extreme northeast end of Shekhawati, where temperatures are highest in summer and winters are harshest. In the 18th century, the town was an important crossroads for caravanners and merchants, and it was at this time that its fort was built. But its influence declined over time in favour of cities closer to the Jaipur region. Under the British Empire, the Maharaja of Bikaner encouraged merchants to return to Churu. It was during this period that the most beautiful haveli, Surana or Surajmal Banthia, the most important temples, the Ganga, the Shantinath were built.
