Khor Al Udayd, the "inland sea", is a vast tidal bay, with a shoreline that is indented for about 15 km from north to south and up to 12 km from east to west. It is connected to the Gulf by a 10 km long channel. No comparable lagoon system is known in the world. The natural diversity creates a wide variety of aquatic habitats, which are of considerable importance to a few endangered marine species: turtles and dugongs. The desert has served as a habitat for Bedouins and their livestock. The prehistoric use of the small islands in the "khor" has also been documented. Traditional farming and fishing settlements once existed in the area, but this lifestyle has now disappeared
