Heart of the national business offering more than 60% of the GDP, nerve center of gas and oil, Messaieed is at the end of the energy chain. Its deepwater port opened to tankers in 1949, as soon as the Dukhan wells came on stream, allowing the export of wealth and seeing 2,100 ships pass through every year. Qatar Petroleum operates numerous pipelines, including a refinery and a fertilizer plant. With more than 15,000 workers, Messaieed is first and foremost an industrial site planted with chimneys and giant tanks to which essential services, a mall, a health center and a few snack bars have been added over time.
