Al Wakrah, a fishing village, occupies a special place in the national memory. Fifteen minutes south of the capital by the expressway, now at the gates of the new airport, the town is increasingly taking on the appearance of a Doha suburb, if not one of its dormitory towns. With more than 140,000 residents, a future World Cup stadium, a Main St lined with stores and snack bars, warehouses and disgraced buildings of eighties modernity, it is easy to pass by without seeing the now Souq Waqif Al Wakrah.
