Petit Futé's opinion on NATURAL POOL
It is the jewel in the crown of Ile des Pins and a passage is necessary during a stay here. This small natural coral basin, wedged between a channel and the sea, is an impressive and wonderful spot, a place simply blessed by nature: protected from the waves of the ocean that come to strike the barrier of rocks that surround it, surrounded by majestic pines and a beach of fine white sand, it hides under its turquoise and clear shallow waters a paradisiacal marine fauna: corals, shells and multicoloured fish. Swimming in this crystal-clear pool, with or without a snorkel, amidst a multitude of multicoloured fish not afraid for a penny, or even curious, is an idyllic moment. But don't forget your plastic sandals, because before reaching the sandy bottoms, it is necessary to walk for a few meters on small rocks! Spending the day there to capture all the magic, discover new specimens and swim several times is a good option. But to avoid crowding, it is advisable to come in the early morning or later in the afternoon, as families and locals tend to go there for lunch, taking advantage of the pool just before and/or after. To get there, you have to leave your car in the car park and follow a paying forest path for about fifteen minutes, at the entrance of which someone will be waiting for you to collect and explain the shortest way. This one crosses the channel, so you will have to walk in the water (more or less high depending on the tide) which does not present any particular difficulty. And for the smallest budgets, it is possible to come by yourself via the track that serves the Meridian. But it can also be pleasant to arrive on the site from Upi Bay, after a trip in a traditional Melanesian pirogue, piloted by a pirogue operator from the Bay of Saint Joseph. In this case, it is necessary to allow forty-five minutes of walking on the forest footpath to reach the natural swimming pool. Tolls and some monitoring have been put in place by the customary authorities to avoid some abuses by cruise passengers. Bathing suit guaranteeing a certain modesty please.
