In the heart of the Midlands, Campbell Town has many historic buildings, antique shops and cafes. Its past is built on the history of convicts. One of them, James Blackburn, designed the Red Bridge, the oldest brick arch bridge still standing in Australia. The convicts who built the bridge in 1838 were housed in cellars under a post house, the Foxhunters Return. Today these cellars have given way to an unusual bookshop. In Valentine Park, the statue of Elisa Forlong reminds us of the major role played by this pioneer in the wool industry in Tasmania.
