Goulburn, population 21,000, is a town in the Southern Tablelands, about 190 km southwest of Sydney. It is the railway departure point and service center for all livestock in the region, and an important stop for motorists on both highways. The town has many old buildings, especially near the railway station, including two 19th century churches (St Saviour's Cathedral and Church of Sts Peter and Paul). The town's information brochures are often highlighted by a photograph of The Big Merino, the giant statue of a merino sheep that stands at the southwestern edge of town near the Hume Highway entrance.
