Richmond is the first major town in the northwestern suburbs of Sydney on the Bells Line of Road, on the way back from the Blue Mountains. The area was explored by English settlers in 1789 and the city was named after Charles Lennox, the third Duke of Richmond. This same region was the third English colony created on Australian soil after those of Sydney and Parramatta. In 1810, Richmond became one of the five Macquarie Towns created as the "granary" of the colonies. Richmond developed thanks to the fertility of its land irrigated by the Hawkesbury River and still has some buildings from the early 19th century
