A small island, 10 km long and 2 km wide, it was for a long time a strategic māori point due to its geographical location precisely on the border of two territories.Around the 1830s, it was also occupied and used as a base by whalers. In 1897 it was purchased by the government with the aim of turning it into a nature reserve, a function it still holds today. This is the case of many islands of this type along the country's coasts: their small size makes them easy to get rid of introduced predators, and therefore ideal for birds, especially those unable to fly!
