This noisy and polluted industrial city of 1.4 million inhabitants, also known for the quality of its cotton saris, is an important commercial center and a strategic crossroads between Delhi and Mumbai. The city is entirely focused on its economic influence and cares little for its historical past. The gardens of Chhattar Bilas reveal beautifully carved cenotaphs that have been left to decay. Its palace is also quite impressive, though poorly maintained and it takes a little imagination to bring out its splendor.
