Markina-Xemein was founded in the 14th century and was the birthplace of famous Basque pelota players. A former defensive town, it still has a fortified center and interesting Baroque and Renaissance buildings. The Patrokua Palace, from the 18th century, is worth a visit. The hermitage of San Miguel de Arretxinaga is also worth a visit to admire the three large rocks that form a chapel around the archangel Saint Michael. Finally, we will visit the church of Santa María and its neoclassical cemetery, without forgetting to visit the pediment engraved with the words "University of Pelota", due to the large number of prestigious players who have trained there.
