Like many cities in northern Kazakhstan, Karabutak was a Russian military post, erected in 1869 to protect the road from Orenburg and, in the context of an invasion of Central Asia, to the Russian troops to take steps before engaging in the steppe. Under the name of Akytubinsk, the fort was all the more developed after the conquest of Central Asia that it was situated on the road to the railway linking Moscow to Tashkent. After independence, the fort, which became a town of 300 000 inhabitants, regained its Kazakh name from Karabutak. There are not many tourist attractions, but if you run by train to Aktau you will certainly be happy to make a small step, and Karabutak lends itself particularly well.
