In the north of Almaty, with its 18 200 km ², Lake Balkach is the largest lake in Central Asia, apart from the Aral Sea. This shallow lake (not more than 26 m) has the particularity of being salted in its eastern part, and in fresh water in the west. It stretches to the southeast of the country over 600 km long for 5 to 70 km wide, with a total of nearly 2 500 km of shoreline (more than twice the length of the Breton coastline).
