Like Aktau, Atyrau is a coastal town where most of the activity focuses on Tengiz gas and oil deposits, located 300 km south of the city, and which are the country's largest deposits. But unlike his little sister on the Caspian, Atyrau, although older than Aktau, is far less attractive. The city was founded in the middle of the th century. She was then one of the first ever Russian outposts in Central Asia and was known throughout the Soviet period under the name Gouriev. Its true development began only with the discovery of the Gisement deposit in 1979. With a reserve of nearly 10 billion barrels estimated, it is one of the largest oil reserves in the world, especially as the surrounding gas deposits are also very important. After independence, like many other cities, it finds a Kazakh name and is christened Atyrau. Apart from the offices of the major oil companies, this city of 160 000 inhabitants offers no special attraction and does not deserve any detour. On site, you will be aware that you will be the time of your stay between two continents. Atyrau is actually located at the mouth of the Ural River, considered to be the natural border between Europe and Asia.
