Medeu and Shymbulak, to the south-east of Almaty, are popular resorts for the inhabitants of the former capital. As the altitude rises rapidly towards the peaks of the Tian Shan and Almaty Peak (3,681 m), the scenery changes and the green treasures of Ile-Alatau National Park unfold along the way. Day trips from Almaty are easy, but in summer there's nothing to stop you from trekking into the mountains for a few days. In winter, Shymbulak is the country's most popular ski resort, while ice-skating enthusiasts can head for Medeu.
