The Pantanal National Park, created in 1980, is located north of the Cuiabà River and southwest of the State of Mato Grosso, on the border with Bolivia. It represents only a tiny part of the Pantanal with only 136 028 ha of surface. However its interest is great, because it aims to protect and preserve the ecosystems of the Pantanal within a sanctuary in which human activity is very strictly controlled. This is a difficult task, as the lands of the national park are all private. Here, as in the rest of the Pantanal, agriculture threatens the fragile balance of a biome of major interest.
