Located north of Lake Titicaca, the Apolombamba Nature Reserve, formerly called Ulla Ulla, was founded in 1972 under the government of Hugo Bánzer Suárez. Its main mission was to protect the vicuna populations from extinction. The Apolobamba mountain range reaches an altitude of 6200 meters. It is estimated that within 15 to 20 years, its glaciers will have completely disappeared. Their melting threatens today a great part of the Bolivian population, since these last ones constitute alone 37 % of the Bolivian glaciers.
