Lalzi Bay is known by three names in Albanian: Gjiri i Lalëzit (pronounced "djiri lialieuzite"), Gjiri i Lalzit ("djiri liazite") and Gjiri i Shën Pjetrit ("djiri cheune pietrite"). Part of the municipality of Durrës, it lies 26 km north of the town center, passing through the villages of Sukth and Hamallaj (no minibus). A rare area relatively untouched by maritime pollution on the coast around Durrës, Lalzi Bay boasts some of the largest sandy beaches in Albania. It stretches for 20 km between the small military base of Cape Paul (Kepit të Palit) to the south and Cape Rodon (Kepi i Rodonit) to the north. For a long time, it was off-limits during the Communist era. But since the 2010s, large housing estates with rental and holiday homes have sprung up along the northern beaches. In the south, real estate developers have not yet taken over: this part is more difficult to access and includes both a lagoon and the Rrushkull nature reserve (650 ha). The latter boasts a rich environment of dunes, reeds, rivers and forests of oak, elm, ash and umbrella pine, home to purple heron and otter, among others. While the northern beaches are rather chic and some private, those in the south are still quite popular, with just a few tavernas and bars offering sunbeds and umbrellas for hire.
