To take a tour of the island, take the coastal road leading to Kõrgessaare. This route allows you to go to Cross Hill (Ristimägi), 10 km west of Kärdla. Tradition requires every visitor to make his cross and the plant on the hill, but good… The first was planted during the last sermon heard here by Swedish farmers before Catherine de Russia deported them to Ukraine. At the northern tip of the island, on the peninsula of Tahkuna, stands a 42 m lighthouse (made in Paris in 1874 and a battle between Russians and Germans during the Second World War) as well as fortifications built before the first. Nearby is the port of Lehtma. By continuing to the west, the major lighthouse of Kõpu, erected in the th to warn the boats of the frequent sand benches around the island (its coastline is shallow). It is possible to climb up to the top to admire the view. According to archaeological research, the Kõpu Peninsula is the oldest region of Hiiumaa; it dates from the stone age, while the rest of the island was still under water (remember that the land gradually rises in the Baltic, showing territories and islands to which they have previously been immersed).
