Estreito da Calheta looks like a canyon nestled in a deep valley. The most common crops are vineyards and sugar cane. Indeed, sugar played an important role in the village during the "white gold" period, allowing Madeira to exchange its riches with those of Flanders (a period commented in detail at the Museum of Sacred Art in Funchal). In addition to wine, Estreito da Calheta developed the cultivation of potatoes, beans and fruit trees.
