Rocha ("field ready to be sown" in Galician) has about 25,500 inhabitants and is the capital of the department of the same name. This is where the main commercial and administrative activities of the region are concentrated. The city is located at the intersection of Ruta 9 and Ruta 15, at km 70, northeast of San Carlos. Its surroundings are worth exploring, especially its 180 km of coastline and its wild beaches. From a tourist point of view, it is not very interesting. It is possible to spend an afternoon here to enjoy the atmosphere of a provincial colonial city and to visit the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios church, built at the end of the 17th century.
