This village, whose name means "beautiful valley", began to be settled in 1897, after Ventura Solis and his wife established their new home here. Solis became advisor to the first expeditions to define the borders with Chile, led by Francisco Moreno. It was not until 1904 that a school and police station appeared. Cholila and its Wild West looks is famous for having sheltered the famous American outlaws Butch Cassidy, Sundance Kid and Etta Place. They had chosen these wild lands of the Cordillera, where the telegraph had not yet arrived, to be forgotten by the detectives of the Pinkerton agency.
