With an area of 669 ha, the village originated in a Carolingian era. Hegenheim would mean the domain of Hagino, the Germanic first name, whose assertion was confirmed by the discovery of a necropolis in the VI-th century. The Roman period marked important passages of tracks crossing the ban leading from Porrentruy to Augst and from Binningen to Rixheim. In 1482, the village-dependent village of the Diocese of Basel was given by the bishops in fee to, including the Baerenfels. Until 1692, the castle and the private chapel belonged to the Baerenfels. It will be rebuilt in 1737 by Aimable-Laurent of Barber and will become the only building to be classified under Historical Monuments in 1990. The th century will mark the installation of a strong Jewish community at the gates of Basel. In 1673, Achille's Achilles allowed Jews to establish a graveyard on his land. The cemetery of 8 000 tombs was of regional importance. In 1821, a synagogue will be built.
