A recommended stop is the port where King Valdemar I, who reunited the Kingdom of Denmark in 1157, settled. On the way to the southern islands, stroll along the pedestrian street of Algade and climb the Goose Tower, the only remaining part of Vordingborg Castle, built by the king around 1160, probably to defend himself against plunder. Around 1360, Valdemar Atterda enlarged it and made it one of the largest castle complexes in the country. It is protected by a 750-metre long, eight-metre high wall flanked by towers. If the weather is warm enough, you can swim from the beautiful pebble beaches on the Knudshoved Odde peninsula.
