It is hard to imagine that this sleepy little town on a mountainside of 6,000 inhabitants, which came close to extinction in the 1950s due to a population collapse, is at the heart of Serbian medieval history. The area was at the heart of the Kingdom of Rascia, under the Nemanjić, and many monasteries and churches in the vicinity participated in a flourishing cultural life, to the point where a new style of art and architecture, the Rascian school, spread from here to the rest of the Balkans. Of this great history, the city has only a few traces; in its present location, it was founded only in 1845
