Crossed by the Camino Navarro of the Way of St. James (a stage between Uterga and Obanos), this small village of 300 inhabitants can be stopped to admire its Romanesque church dedicated to Santa María de Eunate. The origin of this church, estimated at 1170, is shrouded in mystery, with some historians claiming that it was a hospital of the Order of St. John and others that it was built by the Templars, although popular tradition has it that the church was erected by a queen whose burial chapel is located underneath the building. The discovery of the remains of a burial ground and of scallops confirms that pilgrims were buried there.
