In Lumbier (Irunberri in Basque), a town of just over 1,300 inhabitants, the rivers Irati and Salazar meet, carving a spectacular gorge in the rock that can be visited along the old Irati railway line. This is the main point of interest of the town, whose steeply sloping streets are reminiscent of the proximity of the Pyrenees. Here, the houses with coats of arms are legion. In Calle Mayor is the Town Hall, the oldest Renaissance-style 15th-century building in Navarre. Also worthy of note is the church of Santa María de la Asunción, which houses superb Romanesque and Baroque altarpieces.
