60 km north of Kuusamo (E5 towards Ruka, then towards Salla via route 950). Opened in 1956, the 270 km² area stretches right up to the Russian border, with the Oulankajoki (a river with rapids, ideal for rafting and spearfishing) running through it, and is a place of striking wild beauty. The park is home to the Karhunkierros Bear Trail, Finland's most famous hiking trail. For 80 km from Ruka (refuge every 10 km), the route winds through the national park, plunging into spectacular canyons, over rapids, up rocky knolls and into the heart of dense forests.
