This protected area of 2 224 km 2 is nestled at an altitude ranging from 560 m to 2 094 m, adjacent to the Xiang Yong Chinese Protected Area. There were 37 species of large mammals and over 280 species of birds. Notable animals include the leopard and the tiger. The protected area of Nam Ha was established in 1993 by the Laotian Government, which recently opened it to ecotourism with UNESCO's support, training the villagers and ensuring that tourism does not have a negative impact on the nature or way of life of the ethnic groups living in the protected area. UNESCO and the Government of New Zealand are actively contributing to the preservation of this reserve, where several rivers flow: Nam Tha, Nam Fa and Nam Long. Many activities are possible (it is recommended to appeal to an agency such as Green Discovery, for example, or to the services of a local guide): excursions in the forest, visits to cultural sites, stay in the living room, mountain biking, canoe rides on the Nam River, camping, bird watching; all along with local guides.
