Located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, in the heart of Assam, this national park covers an area of 430 km². Declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1940, it is home to endangered animal species such as the Indian rhinoceros (the world's largest population) and the Indian elephant, as well as tigers, bears, panthers, Indian bison, wild cats, houlock gibbons, pythons and numerous bird species (migratory birds, greylag geese, ducks, etc.). The park, which is closed during the monsoon season, enjoys a subtropical climate. The best time to visit is from mid-November to early April.
