From its rocky spur 475 meters above sea level, Châteauneuf dominates its surroundings, offering one of the finest views of the region. The village is nestled around its castle, which was built in 1175 and remains one of the finest examples of Burgundian military architecture. Visit the Saint-Jacques-et-Saint-Philippe church. Dating from the 15th century, it has been renovated and features statues listed as Monuments Historiques, including one of St. John the Baptist attributed to Claus Sluter. Paths, narrow streets and venerable flower-filled buildings: this is one of France's most beautiful villages. The relative congestion of summer weekends is matched by the calm of the rest of the year: a breath of fresh air and an escape to the land of Henri Vincenot. One of his ancestors was a blacksmith. The site's defensive function dates back to Gallic times. The fortifications, and later the château, looked out in three directions: the Côte des Vins, the woods of the Dijon mountains and the wheat fields of the Auxois. It was therefore only natural that the village should become a popular trade fair center. Trade brought a certain prosperity to the area. However, the 19th century was not kind to the area. The area saw its population leave. Today, the site is highly sought-after, and places are hard to come by for those wishing to own a 14th-, 15th- or 16th-century house in this little corner of paradise.
