9 km north of the village of Thumrait, drive west on the 4x4 track which, after 76 km, reaches the Shisr oasis. Nothing on the horizon, possible mirages and a few stones. The hamlet, lost at the outpost of the sands, was as anonymous and unknown as its buried treasures until they were brought to light at the end of the 20th century. Following excavations, the remains of an ancient caravan city identified by archaeologists as Ubar emerged from the sands: a mythical city with a thousand pillars mentioned in the Koran under the name of Iram, the famous Atlantis of the Sands mentioned by T.E. Lawrence alias Lawrence of Arabia
