The Allpahuayo-Mishana reserve was created in 2004. It preserves one of the largest white sand forests (called varillaje) in the Peruvian Amazon. Scientists have counted 145 species of mammals, 476 species of birds, 120 species of reptiles, 83 species of amphibians, 155 species of fish, 522 species of butterflies and 1,780 plant species. This reserve is easily accessible (by road, Km 26.5) and is an excellent place to get acquainted with the Amazon. The area is also partially inhabited and less well preserved than the huge Pacaya Samiria. Interesting for birdwatching lovers.
