The village of Chavín de Huantar has no more than 8,000 inhabitants and is only a little over 3,000 meters above sea level, a reasonable altitude. Obviously, the village has faded under the prestigious archaeological site that it hosts. Since 1985, the archaeological site of Chavin has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The term comes from the Quechua notion of chowpin, which means "the center of the center". One comes there to make the visit coupled with that of the museum. The archaeological complex is located at the confluence of two rivers and was a passage point in the pre-Inca era between the coast and the jungle, a strategic site.
