The village of Sumbay, at 4,127 m above sea level, is located 88 km from Arequipa, behind the Misti volcano, on the road to Cailloma after the Reserva de Salinas and Aguada Blanca. It is known mainly for its caves decorated with magnificent cave paintings dating from the Paleolithic period. Dating back 6,000 to 8,000 years, they represent human figures, camelids, pumas and other animals. There are more than 500 paintings in the 9 caves of Sumbay. A unique archaeological wealth only a few hours from Arequipa. In the village, you can also visit the pretty little church and a train cemetery. An original excursion!
