In the heart of the Río Sarstún protected area, the natural border with Belize, a Q'eqchi' community has developed a high-quality tourism business with the support of the NGO Fundaeco. After an unforgettable 45-minute lancha ride from Livingston, you're welcomed into a waterside ecolodge surrounded by thick mangroves and spectacular vegetation. You'll discover aquatic clearings covered with water lilies, plants particularly appreciated by manatees. The reserve is home to many migratory birds and brightly-colored parrots, as well as a few iguanas perched high up, living close to bird nests whose eggs they enjoy.Ecoalbergue Lagunita Creek has three small dormitories, each with two bunk beds, and one double room with private bathroom. The program includes plenty of interaction with local guides, a kayak trip through the natural canals and a tropical excursion to discover the preserved flora and fauna, not to mention refreshing baths and delicious cuisine. It's a worthwhile initiative, and one that many travel agencies are promoting: ask around. In addition, some establishments - such as the Hotel Casa Perico in Río Dulce - organize day trips to the Río Sarstún, particularly popular with fishing enthusiasts from the capital.
