With 47,434 hectares, the reserve is one of the largest tropical rainforests in Guatemala and is home to an astonishing biodiversity, which represents 50% of that of the country. Declared a protected area in 1996, it is home to the Las Escobas River, the only source of drinking water for Puerto Barrios, Santo Tomás de Castilla, and the 40 or so local communities that live in the area.
